There is something so magical about sailing through the Spice Islands, tracing the routes of ancient explorers through some of Indonesia’s most beautiful islands. Enjoying this trip aboard The Oracle, a traditional phinisi boat, modelled on the very ships the explorers used, is a very special experience.
This is a journey I plan to add to The Oracle’s itinerary, as my own visits there have had such an impact on me, it’s a place I return to again and again.
Banda Neira has a rich history that dates back to the 14th century when it was a major hub of the spice trade. The island's nutmeg and mace were in high demand and were among the most valuable commodities in the world. Part of the Banda islands in Central Maluku Regency, it’s a region that is rich in diversity and history and has its own unique culture.
In the 17th century, Banda Neira became the centre of fierce competition between European colonial powers, including the Dutch and the English. The Dutch East India Company eventually gained control of the island and established a trading monopoly that would last for over two centuries.
Banda Neira's importance to the spice trade was so great that it was once exchanged for the island of Manhattan in what is now known as the Dutch-American Treaty of 1667. The island of Manhattan was then known as New Amsterdam, and the exchange was made in order to secure the Dutch claim to Banda Neira and its valuable spice trade.
Today, Banda Neira is a charming and picturesque island that is steeped in history and tradition. Visitors can explore the island's many historic sites and attractions, including the Dutch colonial fort, which was built in the 17th century and still stands today as a testament to the island's rich history.
One of the highlights of my journey was a private dinner in the historic fort that overlooks the town, it was undoubtedly one of the most magical evenings of my life. Beneath us, the town of Banda Neira glittered with tiny lights reflected in the ancient port. I knew that this was an experience that others would love, and I couldn't wait to offer it as an opportunity on future journeys aboard my luxurious Phinisi, The Oracle..
As I stood in the fort, looking out at the breathtaking view of the island, I couldn't help but feel humbled by the island's history and the important role that it played in the global spice trade. The exchange of Banda Neira for Manhattan was just one chapter in this island's fascinating story, today it is a destination that reflects both the modern and the historical and the opportunity to enjoy it in such a unique way is something I know others will love.
A private dinner at the Fort can be booked as part of a customised journey with The Oracle. With two beautiful guest rooms on board and a dedicated crew, we create memorable journeys to some of the most beautiful parts of Indonesia, always with you in mind.
The Spice Islands tour, with stops in Banda Neira and some of the other jewel-like islands in the archipelago, is a journey I look forward to sharing. Please feel free to get in touch if you would like more information or have a special request.
